Stroke is a medical emergency which results when the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off or greatly reduced. An ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke, occurring about 80 - 85 % of the time, and is due to a blood vessel in the brain getting blocked because of cholesterol deposits called atherosclerosis, or because of blood clots called emboli. A hemorrhagic stroke, resulting from a ruptured blood vessel in the brain, while not so commonly seen, is definitely more serious.

Surgery

Anti-coagulant medication (such as warfarin) where an ischaemic stroke has been caused by a blood clot forming in the heart, breaking off and lodging in the brain. These drugs are very powerful, may have significant side effects and must be carefully supervised by the doctor.

Thrombolytics, such as tPA, may be given if the stroke is caused by a blood clot. Such medicine breaks up blood clots and helps restore blood flow to the damaged area. Persons who receive thrombolytics are less likely to have long-term stroke-related problems. However, not everyone can receive this type of medicine. The most important rule is that the person be examined and treated by a specialized stroke team within 3 hours of when the symptoms start. If the stroke is caused by bleeding rather than clotting, thrombolytics can make the damage worse -- so care is needed to diagnose the cause before giving treatment.

There are few medicines available to treat hemorrhagic stroke. In some cases, medicines may be given to control blood pressure, brain swelling, blood sugar levels, fever, and seizures. You will be closely monitored for signs of increased pressure on the brain, such as restlessness, confusion, difficulty following commands, and headache. Other measures will be taken to keep you from straining from excessive coughing, vomiting, or lifting, or straining to pass stool or change position.
