Anemia is a very common blood disorder that affects mainly women of child-bearing years, although other medical conditions can cause anemia. The cause of anemia is quite easy to understand.

Anemia Causes

There are three main ways that a person can develop anemia: blood loss, lack of the production of red blood cells within the body, and high rates of red blood cell destruction. It is also possible for individuals to have anemia because they have more than one of these ways to develop anemia.

Symptoms of Anemia

Because a low red blood cell count decreases oxygen delivery to every tissue in the body, anemia causes many signs and symptoms. It makes almost any other underlying medical condition worse. For example, if you have an underlying heart problem and become anemic, you are more likely to have problems associated with your heart disease than you would have if you were not anemic.

Anemia produces a variety of symptoms, including weakness, fatigue, and paleness (pallor). Depending on the cause, other symptoms may be present as well. The oxygen deprivation from anemia can make you feel tired and weak, dizzy, short of breath, and confused. Your skin may turn pale—particularly in places that are normally red such as your gums, nail beds, and inner eyelids.
