Headaches - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

By healthnsafety at 2008-12-08 09:35:07
There are various causes of frequent headache. Some of these causes of frequent headache are quite common whereas some are quite rare. Everybody may have had a headache at some point of time in their lives and the severe pain may have forced them into rushing to get speedy medical attention to alleviate the excruciating pain without evaluating the causes of frequent headache. The causes of headaches and dizziness vary. If the headache persists or repeats, it is better to take a close look at what are the underlying causes of the frequent headache.

Causes Headaches

Migraine headaches can be debilitating issue that interferes severely with daily functioning and quality of life. Preventing and treating migraine headaches, however, can be done effectively with a wide range of both over the counter and prescription drugs. The exact causes of migraine headaches remain unknown to the medical community, but it is widely held that serotonin levels in the brain play a significant role in the formation of migraine headaches. Low serotonin levels are usually accompanied by a migraine headache.

The most common type of headache is a tension headache. Some people experience headaches when they are hungry or dehydrated. Traditional theories about headaches link tension-type headaches to muscle contraction, and migraine and cluster headaches to blood vessel dilation (swelling). Pain-sensitive structures in the head include blood vessel walls, membranous coverings of the brain, and scalp and neck muscles. Brain tissue itself has no sensitivity to pain.

Headaches Symptoms

Sinus headaches are usually discernable by this feeling of increased pressure. Leaning forward can cause a significantly uncomfortable feeling as the pressure shifts around inside the nasal cavity. Pain when blowing and sneezing is another strong sign of sinus headache symptoms. Other sinus headache symptoms include blood coming from the nose, or blurred vision and swelling around the eyes. Sinus headache symptoms can become significantly more serious if the mucus within the nasal cavity becomes infected. An infection of this nature can very easily occur, as the mucus behind the nasal cavity is a fertile breeding ground.

Headaches Treatment

If a quick fix is not what you want, and your headaches are becoming burdensome, then you may want to take an active role in seeking out their root cause in order to achieve permanent relief. Naturopathic medicine is one avenue that you can explore in your search for headache relief. Naturopathic medicine examines a person in depth, on an individual basis and then customizes a treatment plan specific to that individual. Treatment plans can include all of or some of the following modalities: acupuncture, diet and lifestyle modifications, homeopathy, botanical medicine and massage.

Take a hot bath and relax, or a hot shower if you do not have time for a bath. The heat can help relieve the headache and the relaxation is an added boost. You can also trying placing a warm compress on your head or alternating between a warm and a cool cloth to stimulate blood flow which may help to reduce the pressure of a headache.

Aromatherapy can also be a great aid to headache relief. Using peppermint or lavender oils either in a bath or just applying a couple of drops to your temple and hairline can help. A cup of herbal tea such as peppermint or chamomile can also have a calming effect that will help to relieve headaches.
